Books #1

11Oct07

Okay. As I told you before, I am not a fan of “books”. I am not educated to be so. I rarely pick up some books and try to finish them unless I get bored after the first 10-20 pages. I will write down some books that I am currently reading, and if by some chance I finish them, I am going to try to make some comments on them.

2 days ago I got two books from the library.

  1. The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins
  2. The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins

I have no particular interest in this Dawkins. I am kinda interested in the evolution theory (given that I am a creationist), and it would be nice to read some books defending the evolution theory by pointing out -the rumour says- strong arguments. I made a quick search and met with The Blind Watchmaker in which Dawkins tries to explain the evolution theory of Darwin by trying to refute the opposite arguments. I have just started reading this book. It is too early to make a worthy comment on this book, however, there have so far two things that bothered me:

  1. I agree with him that you cannot really convey an idea or theory unless you completely believe it by each of your cells. However, I think it is not the case for this book. In my opinion, he is passionately and totally blinded by the evolution theory that you can see “everything besides the evolution theory is just crap, and Darwin is the God himself”. As I commented before, this is a comment on his style after I read only 20 pages. I do not know if he continues with that for rest.
  2. He aims to reach to the readers at any level. I know that it is a difficult task to begin with, and you may create a mess while trying to come up with a clear text. For the 20 pages left behind, it was a total mess. But since it is an introduction chapter, I think it is not a vital problem. I just wanted to note this.

The other book is The Selfish Gene. I suppose it argues some ideas on how our genes affect our behaviours. It is going to be quite interesting to read some stuff on this.

My Reading List (a.k.a. To Read List)

  • Der Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse
  • Metaphysics of Love by Arthur Schopenhauer (I started this book, and read about 20-30 pages, however, I stopped reading it since I had a project assignment.)
  • The Cathcer in the Rye by J. D. Salinger

On-going Readings

  • Freakonomics by Steve Levitt (Absolutely an interesting book on economics)
  • How to Lie with Statistics by Darrel Huff (Quite an old book)
